Illinois Judge
Approves 64 Million Dollar Settlement Over Drug Paxil
(May 24, 2007) -- ST. LOUIS (AP) - A judge in Madison County, Illinois,
has given final approval to a 64 (m) million dollar class-action deal
involving the
antidepressant Paxil.
The deal settles claims that the maker of the drug misled consumers about
its safety. Under the deal, parents with proof they bought the
GlaxoSmithKline drug for their children can recoup out-of-pocket expenses.
Parents who don't have pharmacy records or receipts can get up to 100
dollars refunded by signing a claim form that carries penalties for lying.
GlaxoSmithKline denies it promoted the drug to children while withholding
information about its side effects.
The company and the Food and Drug Administration last year
warned that clinical trial data revealed a higher frequency of
suicidal
behavior in young adults treated with Paxil.
The F-D-A reported eleven suicide attempts among patients given Paxil in
the trials. None resulted in death.
