Online Gaming and Natural Supplement May Eliminate Depression in TeenagersOnline communities are becoming a new way for teenagers to treat their depression.
(March 9, 2006) - Parents with teenagers battling against depression may have new hope in reaching and helping their child. A new approach to beating the blues has been launched in the form of online gaming. Now mixtures of cyber and natural treatments have been adopted by mental health experts in Australia. “It's no replacement for counseling,” says psychologist Ann Wignall, “but it comes as close as an online tool can get to being a way to challenge ‘unhelpful beliefs’. Some (teenagers) may feel uncomfortable seeking a counselor or may simply be isolated,” she says, “and that's where an online service can bridge the gap.” An Austrailian-based depression awareness service, beyondblue, reports “Depression and anxiety are the most common mental-health problems reported in young people, with 20 per cent of those surveyed experiencing depression by the time they reach 18.”
