Bipolar Disorder Diary

Life with bipolar disorder:
An online diary

Part 11

7.31.00

These two months have been quite busy for me. First of all I finished my B.A in Psychology. I finished and handed in my research paper as well. I still have one more paper to turn in but that's about it. I also got myself a new job (or jobs) for the next year. In 3 weeks, I'll be working with youth who have behavior problems as well as psychiatric disorders.

I will also be continuing to work with my professor as a teaching assistant. I need to do a GRE course and take the test so I can start applying for MA programs in "applied behavior analysis" in the U.S. I hope to be going to the University of Michigan and I really hope I'll get excepted.

As you might have noticed, I resolved my problem with what is it I want to be doing with the rest of my life. I just hope I'm right for it.

When I was trying to figure out whether to take the job or not (the working with youth one) I needed references and it turned out that quite a few people thought that me taking this job is a bad idea. The reasons varied from: "considering your bipolar disorder, it will be too intense for you to come in contact with the psyche world on an everyday basis" to "your views about psychology, psychiatry are too dangerous to let you loose on easy impressionable youth". Luckily, most of the people I talked to did support me in this.

I can understand the objections and I understand why my shrink was worried. Hell, he thinks I hate every shrink on earth, that I'm undependable and if I had my way, non of these kids would be on any kind of psychiatric medications. He is totally wrong, of course. I do believe in psychiatric medications. I just have a hard time dealing with fact that I'm dependent on them.

I decided to take the job, anyway. I guess the only way to convince these people that I'm not as bad as they think I am, is to prove to them that regardless of everything, I'm good at what I do.
