So I think it's important that if you end up in a situation like mine, you know how to "talk" to a potentional date rape offender. I block doors off at night, by placing small boxes, end to end, between the door and the wall across from it, because it is easy for some people to pick a lock.
I carry an alarm in my purse that can be easily activated with the flip of a switch. It is attached to my purse strap (by its strap) for easy access.
I place sturdy screws in the sides of the window, and about 5 inches above it, one on each side, to prevent entry in the event the lock fails. |

With regards to rape, the worst type of rapist is the one of the wise variety. He will build a reputation of being a kind and respectable guy, who seems to be the ideal partner and who is trusted by your friends and family. He will treat you well, and will be known to your friends as a sweet guy. He will strike unexpectedly, and will attempt to use his reputation to gain support from the community. |

Don't publically display your address, phone number, or email address on a flyer in a public place such as a coffee shop or local grocery store. People look at those and get ideas and information. |

This rape and safety (tips)may sound obvious,...but it works for me:)
First of all, I only walk around the city or country areas during the day, alone or with a friend.
Also, I look all people(especially men) in the eyes with good posture while walking alone. Plus I take different routes when out walking. I walk alot because I'm a city girl and don't own a car.

If someone actually attacks you, use your body not weapons as they can be used against you. Self-defence and assertive behavior are hugely dettering. |

| Danielle - | | Comments - It was 2 years ago. I was 16. I met him in my algebra class when we we assigned to work on a project together. He said I could come to his house this weekend. I was fine with it, thinking his parents were going to be there. When I got to his house, his parents weren't in the living room, so I figured they were in their room. We started to work on the project. After about thirty minutes, he went into his room to "get something." He called me into his room to show me something. When I got there, he was naked and had a knife. Immediately I screamed and tried to run away. He grabbed me in the hall and held a swiss army knife to my face. He covered my mouth and told me that if I am quiet, I won't get hurt. He took me back to his room and told me to strip. I did and he took pictures of me as I did. I was crying the whole time. After I was naked, he told me to lay on his bed and be quiet. He got some rope from his closet and tied my hands and legs to the bed. I was begging him to let me go. Then he climbed on top of me and shoved shoved him self inside my mouth and told me to suck him. I tried to resist, but he hit me across the stomach really hard and said he could do worse if I didn't comply. I was still crying as I sucked him. Then he came in my mouth. I tried to spit it out, but he forced me to swallow by covering my mouth and plugging my nose. It tasted horrible. Then he untied me. I thought it was over, but I was wrong. Then he threw me back on the bed, and shoved himself into my vagina. I screamed and he covered my mouth and threatened me again. I decided I did not want to die, so I stopped screaming. When he was finished he let me get dressed and go clean myself up. I had blood all down my legs. I can never trust a man like I used to. |

| - | | Comments - 1. Always look inside your car before getting in. You never know when a prowler or attacker could be inside the vehicle.
2. Never park near a van or like-vehicle. They have sliding doors that make for grabbing a person very easy. And, if that is not possible to do - make sure to get in on the passenger side. A perpetrator will likely expect you to get in on the driver side so getting in on the passenger side will protect you. And, of course, automatically lock your doors when you get inside.
3. When walking in a parking lot, etc - keep your eyes averted to all areas - look side to side, back and ahead. Other people may look at you funny but I'd rather have others think I look funny than be violated. Keeping your eyes aware of the surrounding environment makes you more cautious and an attacker is less likely to strike someone that he knows is "scanning." This isn't foolproof certainly but most attackers want to catch people by surprise and an aware person is less likely "surprised" and "unaware" as a person who is just walking in a parking lot, on her phone or playing with lipstick in her purse.

| - | | Comments - not everything works for everyone some people have different ways of defending themselves - dont bother with fancy kicks or punches simple quick and effective is the way if someone attacks you and you are facing them get 2 fingers and push them down next to their colar bone in the gap in their neck this will cut off the artery supplying blood to their brain - they will loose conciousness within 3 seconds - in the time they are unconcious you can get away. if you are attacked from behind there is a pressure point on the hand just above the little finger in the grove between the bones the artery that is supplyin blood to the whole arm do this and you will be making them loose all feeling in their arm long enough for you to get free and knock them out. This may sound viscous but someone who is unconcious cannot rape you. And these do work I have had to use them. |

I was a leasing agent. My job required me to go to apartment alone with strangers all day. Leasing Agents are targets for violent crimes, and are given minimal self defense advice at hire-on.
It was Late winter, there was snow on the ground and it was still getting dark as early as 5PM. Our leasing office closed at 6Pm and we were supposed to stop showing apartments at 5:30. This Guy walks in at 5:45 and asks to see a small 2 bedroom apartment. This model is the farthest out, down a darkened sidewalk. My supervisor was standing off to the side watching my every move. She was a nasty hag whenever she found occasion.We had several of these apartments available. I knew if I'd refused to show this unit, I would get a write up.
I took the guys ID and walked him to the Model. On the way his questions became strange and uncomfortable, he wasn't at all interested in the property. He kept asking about my marital status, and how old I was, did I ever have a boyfriend.
I was 6 months pregnant at the time, but I only weighed in at 116 lbs. I'm very small, and wasn't really showing yet.
When we got to the model I un-locked the door and re-locked the deadbolt with the door still open this makes the deadbolt tounge stick out and its impossible to shut the door with out the keys. No one ever notices this when they are looking for apartments, but we do it all the time. Rule #1 is never go in ahead of the prospect, never let them come between you and the door. He tried to act like a gentlemen and wanted me to go in first. I said "No this is your tour, you go in and look around". He smiled at me and walked about 5 feet into the place and turned around. He stopped smiling when I didn't follow him in. Before I could breath he took one step forward and grabbed my shirt and yanked me inside, while simultaniously trying to slam the door behind me. The door bounced back oped when the lock tounge hit the frame giving me enough time to gain my footing and knee the asshole in the crotch as hard as I could. He bent over right against me and I jumped up in the air and landed my elbow in his back (remembering some random refrence to a crippling kidney punch)he let go of my shirt and I ran screaming at the top of my lungs all the way back to the office. When I got their one of the Maintenance men was for me. None of the ladies from the office waited to see that I was safe. when I told the Maint man what happened he went looking for the guy. No trace. My advice is fight,fight like your the same size or bigger.Don't be afraid to hurt them, and remember they're looking for someone who won't give them any touble. The minute you fight back they're thrown.
I was raped about 18 months before this incedent and something clicked inside me when this second guy attacked. I turned into some crazy Xena/Bodeacia warrior and got out of there. I acted automatically and it was as if I was watching someone else do the fighting. I sort of left my body while it fought back.
I have since learned a lot about rapist and the way they think. Before an attack, we are being "interviewed". That tis what happened to me. He wanted to make me nervous and see how many lines I would allow him to cross before he attacked.
Get on the web and educate yourself, take a selfdefense class, and know that you are a survivor. Something about you made it through to the survivors side of rape. You are a strong powerfull person. Remeber your strength, and the next time you're being "interviewed" look him straight in the eye,square off your shoulders and say "I'm going to be a lot more trouble than you realize, asshole". This worked for me at the carwash bay last year. He just left.

The best advice I heard was to do something crazy. If you are being stalked, followed, or in danger, do something random. The example they provided was get on all fours in the grass and begin eating grass. Just shove it into your mouth.
It sounds insane but think about it... do you really think they're going to come after someone that spontaneously eats grass? |

I was still under the influence and went with it at first then i realized what he was getting to. he got on top of me and i looked at him down there and i said no! slurring my words i said no you dont have a condom on! no! he said "I dont need on I know how to pull out before i cum." I said I dont want a baby" He said "You won't" next thing I knew...he was inside. I remeber the pain...and then i just gave in because i didnt want any harm from him...any morethan he was doing to me emotionally and physicaly. He said not to tell anyone. I could tell he didnt care about me...i felt no love in this act he was doing. He didn't care about me, he just wanted the plesure. I didn't tell anyone that whole day. until that night/ early morning at 1 am. I said goodnight to my mom...and she said" your beautiful my daughter...you know that? i love you and i am proud of you" I said " no i am not...i am hiddious, i am scum, I am dirt, a whore, I am dirty!!! She said "why are you saying that no your not!" I told her the story. She told me to call my cusion. I did he felt horrible. I feel like its my fault for not screaming NO!!!! I am struggleing to keep my sanity and my mood in the middle. My friends and family say i am handleing it better than others would. I am just trying to be emotionless, so i will not feel what has happened to me. I was suicidal the night i told my mom. I felt discusted about myself. I am gradually pulling myself up and its the day after it happened. People say I am strong. Family is the BEST thing I have in my LIFE! |

I have one recommendation for stranger rape - if you must walk at night, always carry mace and have it OUT and READY. Being on the phone also helps; I have had men follow me home from work then abruptly walk back the way they came when I got on the phone with my room mate. I told him that there was "some weird guy following me" and that's generally more attention than a potential rapist is willing to receive.
For acquaintance rape, however, I have one very strong rule that I always follow: Do not drink with anyone you do not trust wholeheartedly. When I say trust, I mean the word in two different ways. One: You must trust them to never, ever take advantage of you. Two: You must ALSO trust them to watch out for you, to act as a barrier for potential flirtations or to prevent you from drinking too much.
I never drink without someone I trust completely present. Without including my immediate family, that only amounts to two people in the entire world.
Another tip: Know how much alcohol or how many drinks will get you past tipsy. Bartenders are required by law to cut you off anyway, but many bartenders can't be bothered, or they don't care. For example, my limit is two drinks, period. It doesn't matter that it would take more than that to get me drunk; I'm not drinking alcohol to become intoxicated. I drink because I enjoy the taste and because I'm in a social situation. If you drink to get drunk, you are willingly and knowingly placing yourself in a possible assault situation. |

I carry the C2 personal protection device- its a consumer taser that shoots 15 ft. I have it in my right hand every time I get out of my car to walk into a store, the park with my dog, anywhere. This is legal and a permit isn't required. Its great because no one would know what it is...they might think its some sort of technology like a phone or something. I don't drop my guard just because I carry it, I am highly observant and imagine scenerios that could occur just so I stay prepared. I think we need to be so afraid of the various things that can help protect us. |
