Wyeth, Partner,
Seek OK for Schizophrenia Drug
(October 13, 2006) -- Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Solvay Pharmaceuticals
submitted a new drug application with the Food and Drug Administration
Thursday seeking approval for Bifeprunox, their experimental
schizophrenia treatment.
The submission is based on safety and efficacy studies that evaluated
Bifeprunox for the
treatment of schizophrenia in about 2,550 patients.
Schizophrenia is a chronic form of psychosis that affects about 3 million
people in North America. It is characterized by
hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thought and emotional blunting.
In March 2004, Solvay Pharmaceuticals of Marietta, Ga., and Wyeth entered
into a collaboration agreement exclusively dedicated to neuroscience-related
research and development. The companies are jointly developing and
attempting to commercialize Bifeprunox and two other compounds in earlier
stages of development for schizophrenia,
bipolar disorder,
major
depressive disorder with psychotic features and other indications.
