Bristol-Myers Launches New Abilify Form

(August 17,  2006) - Drug makers Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. said Thursday they launched a new version of the antipsychotic medication Abilify that dissolves quickly in the mouth.

The Food and Drug Administration approved 10 milligram and 15 milligram quick dissolve tablets of Abilify Discmelt in June for the treatment of adults with schizophrenia or manic episodes associated with Bipolar I Disorder.

The companies said the vanilla-flavored tablet is good for those who have difficulty swallowing pills, and offers an advantage to care-givers and doctors in institutional settings, because some patients given antipsychotic medications may hide pills in their cheek to later spit them out.
