Top 10 Reasons for Having Sex

(August 01, 2007) -- If you think people have sex for pleasure and for procreation, you're right. They also have sex to get rid of a headache, to celebrate a special occasion, to get a promotion and to feel closer to God.

New research published in the August issue of Archives of Sexual Behavior has come up with a list of 237 reasons why men and women have sex.

Here are the top 10 reasons for having sex:

1. Attraction to the person

2. Experiencing physical pleasure

3. It feels good

4. Expressing affection

5. Expressing love

6. Feeling sexually aroused and wanted the release

7. Felt horny

8. It’s fun to have sex

9. Being in love

10. Being “in the heat of the moment”

The study also highlights five general themes that were least frequently cited by the college students as reasons for having sex.

Those themes included:

1. wanting to harm another person (their partner, rival, or a stranger)

2. getting resources (such as a job, money, drugs, or gifts)

3. enhancing social status

4. using sex as a means to a seemingly unrelated end (such as relieving a headache)

5. having sex out of duty or pressure
