Web Resourceslast updated 10/2/99Communities--any page that has a message board or associated chat channel:Make new friends! The usual way of accessing IRC chat requires that you download a shareware program (find how-to information at IRC Primer). However, there is also access to Dal Net through a web site: go to Dal Net and choose the chat option. Most web-based chats require a Java-enabled browser, but then operate directly from your browser without having to load any special software. Chats are real-time. You talk to other people who are there at the same time and messages are usually not saved. Message boards or forums have different names and software, but all amount to the same thing--a kind of bulletin board where you can post a message and read and reply to other people's postings. All you need is your browser. A mailing list (or listserv) is a group discussion via e-mail. A MUD is another interactive system that has features of both chat and message boards, usually accessed by running a special program. Newsgroups are a separate network of public bulletin boards, but are supported by most browsers. Be warned that the culture there is often more free-for-all.
