Collections of Writings about Survivor Issues

Barry Cohen, Esther Giller, and Lynn W., Multiple Personality Disorder from the Inside Out (Sidran Foundation, 1991.)

The first editor is a therapist, but the book consists mostly of accounts by multiples and family members of issues they have faced. I highly recommend it. I really appreciated the variety of experiences and approaches. A good book for people who are recently diagnosed.

Michele Elliott, ed., Female Sexual Abuse of Children (New York, London: Guilford Press, 1993). Elliott works for an organization called Kidscape.

This book is half papers by professionals and half accounts by survivors (both men and women). The professionals are trying to dispel the old myths, but their attempts at new approaches are still pretty muddled. The survivor accounts are quite explicit; good for reassurance that it really did happen to other people too. Unfortunately DID is ignored by most of the authors, though some of the American survivors do refer to it (apparently the diagnosis is much less accepted in Britain, and the majority of the writers are British).

Lynn W., Mending Ourselves: Expressions of Healing and Self-Integration: By the Readers of Many Voices (1993). Many Voices, P.O. Box 2639, Cincinnati, OH 45201-2639.

Many Voices is a newsletter for multiples. This collection of pieces by its readers gives a wonderful variety of ideas and experiences. I was particularly impressed by some detailed accounts of key experiences in therapy. This is another excellent book for people who are recently diagnosed. You can also write to the address given above for information on subscribing to the newsletter.

Louise M. Wisechild (ed.), She Who Was Lost Is Remembered : Healing from Incest Through Creativity (Seal Press Feminist Publishing, 1991).

A collection of art, poetry, and prose by survivors. A good source of inspiration for finding your own creativity. A fair number of the selections illustrate multiplicity.
