Borderline Personality Disorder: What can I do to keep my children from getting it?First of all get all of your diagnoses made and treated. You need to be the best parent and person you can be. The best gift a child can have is a happy, healthy, loving parent. The screening test I use for my patients is available for free at Biological Unhappiness. I highly recommend you listen to Zig Ziglar's tape series "How to Stay Motivated" and "How to Raise Positive Kids in a Negative World." No matter how motivated or dedicated, without the knowledge your children will suffer from your ignorance. Most diagnoses I discuss in my new book "Biological Unhappiness" are genetic - and many aren't diseases at all such as attention deficit disorder and the generalized anxiety disorder. These diagnoses need to be made and treated in children. Childhood depression may "hard wire" the individual to be easily depressed for the rest of his/her life. It's far more common than most people know. Knowledge is indeed power, and it's your responsibility as a parent to learn as much as possible in this regard. Genetics may be as high as 50/50. Therefore, you must get these other diagnoses treated before they cause brain damage. You and those who impact on the children need to get your own problems taken care of. You also need to make sure they stay healthy nutritionally and physically - meaning exercise and avoiding head injuries. In the strongest terms possible I recommend doing affirmations every night with your kids, and discussing values and preventing drugs and other problems. The affirmations I use, mostly from Zig Ziglar, are here.
