Borderline Personality Disorder - BPD faqs

Question:

My husband shows and has shown almost all symptoms of this disease. Can lack of truthfulness also be symptom? He has been a habitual liar since the day we met.

Also my husband is an over-the-road truck driver, therefore he has very little at home time. Can he be helped without daily in-house therapy?

Answer:

Lying is not a direct symptom of the BPD, and I have many borderlines who are extremely honest and moral people. The BPD is not a character disorder, which unfortunately pathological lying generally is.

Lying because of dysphoria induced self destructive behaviors is not uncommon. Other conditions may be contributing, such as attention deficit disorder and the generalized anxiety disorder where behaviors and feelings are often "treated" with lies.

I believe in treating all the medical problems you can, then see what's left and work on that. Your husband would probably be helped enormously by listening to tapes in the car, and Zig Ziglar is the best place to start!
