Afterword
The magnificent wonder of being a parent is the knowledge
that you have the power to model a world of delight, creativity, joy,
effectiveness, excellence and success to your children: to mold your children
into the kind of human beings that they can be proud of. Your actions and
words are not unlike the fingers and tools that model clay. They can create
courage or fear, esteem or self-loathing, strength or weakness, tenacity or
irresolution, joy or ambivalence, wisdom or ignorance, tolerance or prejudice,
hopefulness or hopelessness, passion or vapidity, empathy or indifference,
excitement or lethargy.
It is disheartening to hear so many parents speak of what
disappointments their children turned out to be, especially when we know that
all children start out with the same chance for success. Your children are a
direct result of what you make them: how you act in front of them, how you
speak to them, and how much time and effort you put into giving them every
opportunity possible to assure their chance for success.
You begin by creating a world for yourself that encompasses
all of the qualities you would like your children to possess. You begin by
taking care of yourself first, so that you become the kind of person who has
the energy, clarity of mind and emotional stability to be a model of
excellence to your children. Only then will you be a WIN-WIN parent: a parent
who creates a family to which children want to belong.
