Recovery Skills Training - Part I

When: January 17-21, 2000

Where: Putney, Vermont

Learn how to Successfully Self-Manage Psychiatric Symptoms with Mary Ellen Copeland, MA, MS author of The Depression Workbook: A Guide to Living with Depression and Manic Depression, Living Without Depression and Manic Depression: A Guide to Maintaining Mood Stability and Wellness Recovery Action Plan.

This intensive five day program will be held at the Putney Inn, Putney, Vermont, from January 17 - 21, 2000. The training is designed to teach basic recovery skills and concepts --including the Wellness Recovery Action Planning system for monitoring and responding to symptoms -- to people who experience psychiatric symptoms, their supporters and health care professionals. By the end of the week, participants will:

  • understand the basic underlying concepts that must be practiced in recovering from psychiatric symptoms;
  • develop a list of simple, safe, non-invasive and effective tools that can be used to relieve symptoms;
  • complete the first four sections of a personal WRAP;
  • know how to develop a personal crisis plan.
The texts for this training will be:

Copeland, Mary Ellen. The Depression Workbook, A Guide to Living with Depression and Manic Depression. Oakland, CA: New Harbinger Publications, 1992.

Copeland, Mary Ellen. Living Without Depression and Manic Depression: A Guide to Maintaining Mood Stability. Oakland, CA: New Harbinger Publications, 1994.

Copeland, Mary Ellen. WRAP: Wellness Recovery Action Plan. Peach Press, 1997.

Completion of this training qualifies participants to take Part II, Recovery Educator Training.

Who Is Eligible for this Training

Anyone who is interested in working on recovery skills, or in supporting a person or people who are working on recovering from psychiatric symptoms, is welcome at this training. However, if your symptoms are currently severe, it is suggested that you wait until they subside before attending this training. It’s hard to work on recovery skills when you are not feeling at all well. There will be support people available during the training but they will not be able to monitor medications or provide medical care. If you are not clear about whether you should attend because of issues related to your symptoms, call the office of Mary Ellen Copeland and discuss it with a staff member.

There are no academic or professional prerequisites. The group will be limited to 25 people on a first-come, first-served basis. If the Institute is oversubscribed, an additional training will be offered as soon as possible. Continuing Education Credit will be available for an additional fee of $50.

Registration

The cost of the seminar is $950. A deposit of $475 (U.S.), payable to Mary Ellen Copeland, should be sent before December 15 to reserve space. The additional $475 will be payable at the seminar. You may also use a credit card (Master or Visa only). Register here. Upon receipt of your deposit you will be sent confirmation and additional information.

Payment includes instruction; copies of three books --The Depression Workbook, Living Without Depression and Manic Depression, and Wellness Recovery Action Plan; breakfast, lunch, and snacks for five days. Your registration fee does not include transportation, room or dinner costs.

The institute will be held at the Putney Inn in Putney, Vermont, January 17-21, 2000 from 9 AM to 5 PM. Registration is from 8:30-9:00 AM on January 17. There will be ample time for breaks and lunch. Breakfast and lunch will be including in your registration fee. Dinner will be on your own. It can be purchased at the Putney Inn or at your choice of several inexpensive local restaurants (Mexican, Chinese, Italian, New England). Snacks will be provided.

Vermont is a beautiful state and especially beautiful in the winter. A variety of winter activities are available, including sledding, cross country and down hill skiing, snowboarding, etc.

Your registration fee does not include transportation, room or dinner costs. You need to make these arrangements yourself. Call the Putney Inn--see enclosed brochure--to make your room arrangements. The fee for the room is $78 per day, plus tax (single or double occupancy).
