AstraZeneca Looks to
Expand Seroquel's Uses
Wants FDA to approve Seroquel to treat bipolar depression
(January 2, 2006) -- AstraZeneca said it is seeking a new indication for
Seroquel,
a drug currently approved to treat the manic phase associated with bipolar disorder.
The Anglo-Swedish drug maker is seeking approval from the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration to market the drug to
treat
the depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder. The drug is
also approved to treat schizophrenia, another neurological disorder.
If approved, Seroquel would be the only drug cleared to treat both the
depressive and manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder, which
affects more than seven million American adults and consists of recurring
episodes of mania and depression.
Most
patients with bipolar disorder
are symptomatic almost half of their lives. Almost 50% of patients with
bipolar depression attempt suicide, and approximately 10% to 15% commit suicide,
the company said.
Seroquel has been on the market since 1997 and reached sales of $2
billion in 2004.
