Catching a Darkness: Glimpses of My Sister's Mania

It was 5:30 in the morning when I heard the screaming. In the room next to mine, my sister was talking to herself again, swearing to the walls, and whispering to the "microphones" about her plan to take over the world. I had seen my sister act like this for weeks now, but somehow, her actions on this morning seemed even more scary.

Lying in bed with eyes open wide, I felt my heart begin to pound with fear.

Then suddenly there was silence, and soon, quiet whispers as my sister talked to herself and creaked down the stairs. I got out of bed to follow her, wondering what she was going to do this time to bring attention to herself, and was ready for anything.

After the mania-back on her medication,
and on  her way to recovery, Jessica still
holds on to some memories of her past.

As I followed my sister outside, I saw her walking barefoot down the side of the street, screaming at the sidewalk and waving her dark hair in the wind.

Her ripped up black dress sparkled in the street lights as she turned the corner and a lone car sped by, the person inside glancing at the strange woman on the side of the road. All I could hope for was that this morning, my sister would look strange enough to get noticed, dangerous enough to get pulled over by the police. Only then could she be put into the hospital where she would be safe and on her way to some sort of recovery. But all I could do was hope.
