A Primer on Depression and Bipolar Disorder
IV. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I have learned a great deal from my travels along the dark road of
depression, and the kaleidoscopic road of mania; and I have learned yet more
from my fellow travelers along those roads. I thank those who have shared their
insights and experiences with me; from some of them I have learned just how
brave, and how determined, people can be in the face of devouring illness.
On the medical side, I can say that I literally owe my life to Drs. Grace
and Dubovsky; without their effective intervention I would surely have killed
myself before the end of 1986. Likewise Dr. Kathleen Johnson guided my change
from an ineffective tricyclic to an SSRI in 1997. I don't know who to thank for
switching me from lithium to Depakote while I was in the rehabilitation
hospital in 1997.
Finally, I owe deep thanks to my then wife, Barbara, who helped in every
way anyone could have in the terrible year 1986. She kept me moving, fighting,
trying; without her courage I would surely have perished. Likewise my deepest
thanks to Rosemary Blanchard who stuck by me in my 1996-97 crisis, offering me
loving support in that very chaotic time.
