Needs Research Project - Part 4

RESULTS
Treatment Options Tried by Project Participants
Table 9. shows the percentile distribution of specific treatments
for an Anxiety Disorder received by research participants. Many
research participants have tried more than one type of treatment for
their Anxiety Disorder. The treatment called Medication means
Prescribed Drugs for an Anxiety Disorder - including Minor
Tranquillisers, Antidepressants, anti-emetics, sleeping drugs and
beta blockers. The treatment type Psychotherapy was offered as a
treatment option and the sub-categories Psychiatrist and
Psychologist were specified by research participants. Many of the
treatments are self-originated attempts to ease the Anxiety Disorder
ie. not initiated or supervised by a Health Professional.

A total of 17 (or 3.28%) of the research participants have
receieved no treatment at all for their Anxiety Disorder. A total of
84 (or 16.2%) of the research participants received only Prescribed
medication (Antidepressant and/or Tranquilliser) as a treatment for
their Anxiety Disorder. A total of 60 ( or 12%) of the research
participants received only Prescribed medication and counselling.
Participants were asked to report the
types of treatments they had tried which they consider most
effective. Many research participants reported more than one type of
treatment that they had tried was effective for their Anxiety
Disorder. Table 10. shows the considered effectiveness of the
different treatments received for an Anxiety Disorder by the
research participants. Table 10. is shown in order of most
tried/used treatment option.

A total of 188 (or 36.3%) of research participants considered none
of the treatments they had tried were effective for their Anxiety
Disorder (this figure also includes the participants that had
received no treatment at all for their Anxiety Disorder). Of the 84
(or 16.2%) research participants that had only received Prescribed
Medication as a treatment for their Anxiety Disorder, a total of 10
(or 1.9%) research participants considered Prescribed medication as
being effective. Table 11. shows the effectiveness of treatments (in
order of considered effectiveness) offered by Health Professionals
as considered by research participants.

participants think that Prescribed medication, changing their
thinking patterns and Graded Exposure would be effective in stopping
the panic attacks and/or anxiety. It also shows the degree that
research participants think the role their thoughts play in
maintaining the Anxiety Disorder.
