How to Get Comfortable

Social anxieties present unique problems to solve. On the other hand, many of the skills that are helpful for those with social phobias and anxieties are similar to the shills for panic attacks.  I will begin this section by teaching you skills specific for social anxieties ("Challenge your Negative Observer" and "Practice your skills").  Then I will direct you to the Panic Attack Self-Help Program to master skills that are common to both problems.

Challenge your Negative Observer

  • Listening for the negative thoughts
  • Handling negative thoughts
  • The most powerful question
  • The second level of challenge

Practice your skills

  1. Set realistic Tasks that help you practice the central skills.
  2. Describe your Tasks in behavioral terms.
  3. Properly assess your fear, then target your practice.
  4. Create simulations, role-plays and other structured sessions for skill practice.
  5. Learn to perform while anxious.
  6. Give special attention to your self-talk.
  7. Do something every day to confront your fears.
