Antidepressants don't work for me — can I use marijuana instead?

Question:

Dear Stanton:

Hi I am 19 years old and I have been on anti-depressants for years. I have also been in therapy, and hospitalized for my depression. I am currently taking 60mg of Prozac and 1000mg of Depakote and I still have my rage fits and I am constantly depressed the medicine does not work for me. Depression is a disease that runs in my family and I was wondering if marijuana would help my depression?

Ash

Stanton's Answer:

Dear Ash:

I can't tell you to use marijuana. It's illegal and you're young. I can say that antidepressants often don't work and people try a variety of methods to combat depression, and some find their own solutions. But if you use an illegal drug and it works, the problem is then you need to use it all the time (which is also a problem with antidepressants, but at least they're legal).
