Alkermes Says Oral
Alcohol Treatment Tests Well
(July 12, 2007) -- Alkermes Inc. said Monday new results from a clinical
trial of ALKS 29, an oral treatment for
alcohol dependence, are positive.
Cambridge, Mass.-based Alkermes said ALKS 29 was generally well
tolerated among alcohol-dependent patients tested and led to both a
statistically significant increase in the percent of days abstinent and a
decrease in drinking compared to placebo when combined with psychosocial
therapy.
Based on these results, the company said it plans to move forward with its
development program for oral product candidates to treat alcohol dependence.
Last year, Alkermes received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration for Vivitrol, known generically as naltrexone. Vivitrol is a
once-monthly injectable medication for the treatment of alcohol dependence and
was developed with Cephalon Inc. of Frazer, Pa.
Alkermes also has a schizophrenia treatment called
Risperdal
Consta on the
market.
