God of My Understanding

God of My Understanding,
You seem to have outgrown these walls,
I’ve tried so long to contain you,
But you don’t fit in my glass anymore.

I took my first drink,
A thousand years ago,
The world and I were young then,
But now we’ve grown so old.

I never thought I’d say this,
Until I lost my pride and health,
God of My Understanding,
Save me from myself.

God of My Understanding,
You seem to have outgrown these walls,
I’ve tried so long to contain you,
But you don’t fit in my glass anymore.

I’ve hated you such a long time,
But I don’t even know your name,
When I hear you called “Our Father”,
I feel a hidden shame.

See, Daddy was quite a drinker,
He beat me most every day,
God of My Understanding,
Tell me you’re not that way.

God of My Understanding,
You seem to have outgrown these walls,
I’ve tried so long to contain you,
But you don’t fit in my glass anymore.

I’ve heard you’re a God of Mercy,
Won’t snuff out this flickering flame,
But a storm’s blowing around me,
And shelter is why I came.

Inside this old church building,
I hear the raindrops dance,
God of My Understanding,
You’re my last, my only chance.

God of My Understanding,
You seem to have outgrown these walls,
I’ve tried so long to contain you,
But you don’t fit in my glass anymore.
