Lori's Story (7/12/97)

I have just read Phillip's story, and I am still sniffling!! What a wonderful piece of inspiration that was for me.

We have a 7 year old son with ADHD. He is on Ritalin, and has been for about 3 years. He was diagnosed at a very early age, as I insisted to my Doctor that there was something different about my son. This particular Doctor told me to take some parenting classes and gave me a couple of books to read on letting a child control your life!! My father, an elementary school principal insisted I find another Doctor. I did, and Cameron was quickly diagnosed. What a change.

I wish this were the happy ending to my story, but as you know, it is a struggle every day. Not just for Cameron, but for everyone he comes in contact with. Cameron is a very bright, witty and funny little boy. He was reading books at the beginning of kindergarten, and typing stories on the computer at the beginning of grade one. This sounds just wonderful doesn't it? He is now having the year from HELL!! Grade two is a year that we will never forget. Cameron can spell words that I don't know the meaning of, but get him to write it on paper. It just doesn't happen. Projects that should be so easy for Cameron don't get finished - actually we are having a good day if they get started! We have finally got Cameron in a program for gifted students where he is able to do much of his work on the computer. This is helping somewhat but there is still the classroom he is in where the discipline is nil. The children are constantly running around, not doing what they are told, and this is of course extremely distracting for anyone, especially if you have adhd.

I guess one good thing is that grade two will be over in 6 months and we will start the process again. Next year I will listen to my instincts and have him switched at the beginning of the year.

I was so happy to hear that Phillip's story has a happy ending. I hope I can say this about our story in 20 years. Thank you for your time - Best of luck and thank you Phillip.

Lori
