Figure 3: Structures deep within the limbic system play a crucial role in the expression of emotions and the activity of the reward system of the brain. The experience of pleasure and the modulation of reward is based on a reward "cascade," a chain of neurons within the limbic system that interact through various signaling molecules, or neurotransmitters. The authors propose that a biochemical deficiency in one or more of these neurons or signaling molecules can supplant an individual's feeling of well being with anxiety, anger or a craving for a substance that can alleviate the negative emotions.
